Watching My Fake Sister Dig Her Own Grave novel · Chapter 7 of 32

Chapter 7: Brendan

I didn't close the screen.

Closing it would have looked guilty.

"Learning the business," I said. "Verity told me to get to know the place."

"In her office. With the door shut."

"It was open."

"It's shut now."

He reached past me and pulled the screen around so he could see it.

Grants. Wires. A column of fifteen-thousands running down the page.

He frowned at it, but not the right way.

He frowned like a man who didn't want to read numbers he hadn't been asked to read.

"This is the foundation's banking," he said. "You don't have clearance for this."

"I'm a Devlin. Isn't that clearance?"

That landed somewhere.

He straightened up.

"Get out of her chair."

I got out of her chair.

My left stump had been bad all morning and I had to brace on the desk.

He watched me do it and didn't help, and then looked away.

"Dad's driver's downstairs?" he said.

"In the garage."

"I'll walk you."

It wasn't an offer.

The elevator was all mirrors.

I could see four of him and four of me.

The tall brother in the good suit, the thin sister with the bad leg.

We didn't look like a family.

We looked like a man escorting someone out of a store.

The garage was cold and smelled like exhaust.

Dad's car was at the far end.

"I don't know what you're doing," he said, staring straight ahead. "But I know what it looks like."

"What does it look like?"

"Like you came home and decided Verity's the problem."

I didn't answer.

"She was six when they brought her home," he said. "Six. She slept on the floor of your room for a year because the bed was yours and she didn't want to take it. She started that foundation when she was nineteen. She's put up your face in every bus shelter in the state."
