Chapter 13: What Willa Said
The ambulance took Willa to the city hospital, and Luka drove me behind it.
At three in the morning the emergency room smelled of floor cleaner and burnt coffee.
Bree came through the sliding doors in pajama pants and her coat, with her red curls flattened on one side.
"Where is she?" Bree asked.
"Behind the curtain. They're keeping her until a counselor comes."
"Did she try to?"
"She stood on the ledge. She stepped back."
Bree looked at me for a long moment.
"You went up there after her, and you didn't tell me where you were going."
"I'm telling you now."
"Fine," she said, and hugged me so hard my ribs creaked. "Next time I'm coming."
A nurse put her head out of the curtain.
"The patient is asking for Darby."
Luka squeezed my hand once and let it go.
Willa sat on the cot in a hospital gown, with a plastic bracelet on her wrist and her ponytail undone.
Her eyes were swollen almost shut.
"You came," she said.
"You asked."
"I thought you'd tell them to keep me away from Dane."
"I'm not telling anybody anything tonight. I said that."
She picked at the bracelet.
"I never heard her," she said.
I waited.
"Dane told me about that night the morning after the final. The name, the cat, the promise about Capital. Then he told me again all summer, in his car with the windows up, over and over."
"And you kept it."
"At the fountain, when he looked at me, I knew I could take it." Her voice cracked. "Nobody had ever looked at me like I was the answer."
