Chapter 10: Thirty Days Isn't Up

Preston carried the pancake plate to the sink and didn't say a word.

Poppy ate her syrup in peace.

Nobody else touched their food.

It took until the kids were bathed and asleep, and Bridget had shut herself in the room next to theirs with the baby monitor, for me to find him.

He was standing at the end of the pool in the dark with his hands in his pockets.

"I didn't ask her to say it," he said, without turning.

"I know."

"I won't use it until you tell me I can."

"She picked it herself."

"She's three."

"She picked you in about a day and a half." My voice wobbled. "I spent three years teaching her to be careful, and you got there in a week."

He turned around.

He looked wrecked.

"I'd do anything to deserve that," he said.

I crossed the stone between us before I could change my mind.

He didn't move.

He was waiting, with his fists balled in his pockets, for me to decide.

I put both my hands flat on his chest.

His heart was slamming under my palms.

"Rule three," he said, rough.

"It's on a list about our daughter."

"Hannah."

"Tonight doesn't count."

"Thirty days isn't up."

"I know how long thirty days is," I said. "Kiss me."

He took his hands out of his pockets.

He cupped my face, and his mouth came down on mine so hard I made a sound against his lips.

It was three years of waiting in one kiss.

He tasted like coffee and salt.

I grabbed his shirt in both fists and dragged him backward, through the glass doors, down the dark hall to the east wing, and he came with me the whole way, kissing my neck, my jaw, the corner of my mouth.

His bedroom door shut behind us.

I heard the lock turn.

I didn't know which of us had done it.

He backed me against the door and pushed his thigh between my legs.

"Tell me what you want," he said into my ear.

"You."

"Say it properly."

"I want your mouth on me," I said. "I want your cock inside me. I want it now."

He made a low sound, almost a laugh.
