Chapter 14: The Market Stall

"Ask her," I said.

Jack held my eyes a moment longer, then turned and went down the hall.

I got to the terrace doors behind him in time to see Bridget standing by the pool with Max in a towel at her feet.

She saw the phone in his hand.

She didn't try to take it back.

"It was me," she said.

"The video."

"The video. The account. The address."

Jack set the phone down on the edge of a table, very carefully.

"You sent my son's face to the world to bring me to your door," he said.

"Yes."

"You could have called me."

"I called you for a year, Jack. Your agent changed your number." Her voice shook and went on. "I wrote you letters. They came back unopened. I'm not saying that excuses it."

"No."

"I'm only saying I tried the easy way first."

Jack crouched, picked up Max, and held him against his chest.

Max said, "Daddy's wet," and put his head down on his father's shoulder.

Jack closed his eyes.

When he opened them, he looked past Bridget at me.

"I need to be somewhere with a lot of people in it," he said. "Come with me, Hannah. Please. I don't trust myself with her."

Bridget made a small noise.

"Go," I told him. "Take Poppy's hat for Max. The sun's strong."

I hadn't known I was going to say it.

I just did.

We drove the five minutes into town in the back of Preston's car with Max asleep across Jack's lap.

The fish market was loud and ordinary.

Gulls, crates of ice, a man hosing down a slab.

It was the same stretch of concrete where the clip had been filmed, and I still had the angle in my head, the stalls on the left and Poppy small on the right with her yellow hat.
