Chapter 18: Before Heaven's Sects

By dawn the village green of Lantern Ford held more sects than it had ever held cows.

They came down the three roads in the gray light, with their banners rolled and their swords sealed in cloth.

There was a mountain sect of gray-clad monks and a river sect in blue.

Two small sects of the northern passes came with a dozen men each.

The headman stood in the middle with his weak chin up and the dry white basin behind him.

Beside the basin, on an upturned bucket, sat the gate warden with her bell in her lap.

"By the oldest law of the sealing," she said, "when the seal breaks, I may call every sect to witness."

"I have called you. Sit down, and be quiet."

They sat.

Cloudpeak took the north side of the green, in white and gold, with the elders in front and Pei at their head.

Behind Pei stood a figure in a hood, with a hand on a chain at his neck.

Redcliff took the south, in red, singed and sooty from the night.

The hall had lost a roof beam and its kitchen.

Luo had held the kitchen stair with the champion and a stew pot, and he was prouder of the pot.

He stood with his good hand on Jinghan's shoulder, and Jinghan felt his heart thump against his own.

"Speak," said the warden. "Cloudpeak first."
