Chapter 23: No Demon Now
"Master Fang," the old woman said again. "Cloudpeak has no master."
"It has twelve elders and a roll with a gap in it."
She held up the gold crown.
"Take your seat, and we will strike the order that struck you."
"There is no one else the disciples would follow down a wall."
Jinghan stood in the barn door in his shirt, with straw in his hair and bite marks anyone could count.
Behind him he heard Luo's bare feet stop on the boards.
He did not turn.
"Elder," he said. "I have a question."
"Ask."
"For how many years did Cloudpeak teach its sword immortal that he was nothing without the sect?"
She said nothing.
"I was eight when I came up the mountain. I owe it everything I know."
"I'll teach the Third Form to anyone who asks, on Cloudpeak or off it, for the rest of my life."
"But I won't sit in that chair."
"Why?" she said quietly.
"Because it's the chair that learned to want a spring in a jar."
A long breath went through the kneeling row.
"Put it on your own head, Elder," Jinghan said.
"You were the only one who crossed the green to stand beside a frightened boy."
She looked at the crown in her hands.
"I am sixty-four," she said.
"Then you have time to do it better than he did."
He thought she laughed.
It cracked in the middle, and she put the crown on her own head, askew, and a ripple went down the row of elders.
Tang Yu was sitting on the fence at the back of the yard with his arms around his knees.
