Chapter 11: Thames Street

Claire's POV

By Monday morning I had cried in the shower, eaten four pieces of toast, and told my father the whole story in one breath.

He had listened to all of it without interrupting, and then he said, "Well, he bought nails."

"He what?"

"Finishing nails. Two inch. He paid with a ten and let me count the change." My father shrugged. "A man who buys nails he doesn't need is a man who wants to stand in a shop."

Jo, perched on the counter with a coffee, nearly choked.

"I love your dad," she said.

"I'm not discussing Nathaniel today," I said.

"You said his name."

"I said it as a noun."

The bell over the door rang.

I looked up and my stomach dropped.

Preston came in with a bouquet of red roses so large that he could barely see over it.

He wore a blue suit.

He had a fresh haircut and the practiced smile.

Behind him, through the glass, I saw two men I knew from the firm leaning on a car, and a woman on the sidewalk holding up a phone.

He had brought an audience.

"Claire," he said, and the whole shop went silent.

There were six customers.

A man with a bag of potting soil, two women comparing grout, a boy with a hammer, a contractor, an old man buying a single light bulb.

I came around the counter.

"Preston, I'm at work."

"I know. I'm sorry to come here." He lowered his voice, but not by much. "I had to see you. I've been a fool, and I want everyone to know that I know it."

"Everyone," I said.

"I want to apologize in public. You deserve that." He held out the roses. "Tiffany is gone. I've sent her away. I'll marry you at Easter, and Mother has already agreed, and we'll make this right. Nathaniel used you. He's been using everybody for years."
