Chapter 13: The Alley

"Stay where you are," I told Tiffany. "Don't go back inside. We're coming."

I hung up before she could answer.

Nathaniel already had his keys out.

"The alley behind the Atlantic," he said. "There's a loading door by the laundry."

"How do you know that?"

"I own the building next to it."

My father and Jo were coming back up Thames Street with two cups of coffee and the guilty faces of people who had not carried anything heavy.

"Jo," I said. "Truck."

"Say no more," said Jo, and dropped both coffees in the planter.

We were in the alley eleven minutes later.

Tiffany stood by a dumpster in the same white sundress she had worn into my wedding car, now gray at the hem.

She had no shoes on.

Her hair was flat on one side.

She saw Nathaniel and went still, the way she had in the doorway of my new house.

Then she made herself look at him.

"Nate."

"Tiffany."

That was all either of them said for a while.

Jo, who has never in her life let a silence stand, got out of the pickup and held out a bottle of water.

"You look terrible," she said. "Drink this."

Tiffany drank half of it with both hands.

"The baby is Preston's," she said, to me, not to him. "I want you to hear that first. It was always his."

"I figured," I said.

"Margaret has known since the fourth week. I told her myself, because I thought she'd be glad." Tiffany laughed, and it cracked. "She took me to lunch at the club and told me what to do about it, and she did not say the word 'baby' once."

"What did she tell you to do?"

"End it. Before the wedding. A baby before the vows would make Preston look like he'd been caught, and she hates being caught." She wiped her face on her wrist. "I said no. I said I'd keep it quiet, I'd stay out of sight, I'd take the apartment on Spring Street."
