Chapter 19: The Question on the Page

Claire's POV

For three days Nathaniel was perfect.

He was polite at breakfast and gentle in bed, and he said "of course" to everything I asked.

He kissed my forehead before he left for the office.

It was the most terrifying thing that had ever happened to me.

On Wednesday night I found him in the study at eleven, with the lamp on and no papers in front of him.

I shut the door and leaned on it.

"What did I do?"

"Nothing."

"You've been agreeing with me since Sunday," I said. "You agreed that the sea is blue. Nobody agrees with me. Jo doesn't agree with me. What happened?"

He looked at the desk.

Then he opened the center drawer, took out a folded page, and set it down in the lamplight.

I knew it at once.

I had signed it in his kitchen the night of the wedding, wearing a gown with forty buttons and a face that had not slept.

"You took it out of the drawer," he said. "It's all right. It's yours as much as mine."

"I wrote on it."

"I saw."

I stepped closer and read my own pencil.

June 14, circled.

WHEN IT ENDS.

"You read that as a countdown," I said.

"It is a countdown."

"It's a question."

"Claire." He said my name with great control. "You don't need to explain. You came here to win. You've won. I am glad of it. I only ask that you tell me when you've decided, so I can make it easy."

Heat went through me, the clean kind that comes just before a thrown plate.

"Make it easy," I said.

"Yes."

"You'll make it easy for me to leave you."

"I'll do whatever is least painful for you."
