Chapter 8: In Front of the Cameras

I stood in the doorway with my back to him.

"Stay until she's well," Dominic said. "That's all I mean."

"And the envelope?"

"Your father wrote on it. Play after the vows. There are no vows."

"You're keeping my father's letter from me."

"I'm keeping a promise to him."

I turned around.

He was leaning against the desk with one hand covering his eyes.

He had not slept at all, and there were shadows under his eyes.

"Three years of Get lost," I said. "Not one reason. Not once."

"Elin."

"I reached for your hand at our party, in front of everyone, and you said it to my face. Do you know what that cost me?"

His hand came down.

"If I had said anything else to you," he said, "I would have said everything."

It was not a reason, and it was not an answer.

I went back up to the blue room and lay awake until the window turned grey.

I kept hearing him say it, and I still did not know what it meant.

Morning came in grey.

I woke to voices on the front lawn, a lot of them, and the slam of a car door.

I went to the window.

Rhonda stood at the foot of the steps in a black coat and pearls, and behind her were two photographers and a woman with a microphone.

"Miss Marden!" the woman with the microphone called up to my window. "Are you being held in this house?"

I ran down the staircase, still in yesterday's clothes.

Dominic was already in the hall.

He had changed his shirt and combed his hair, and his face had gone back to stone.
