Chapter 17: Heath's Mother

I crossed the parking lot with the phone in my fist and Mallory a step behind me.

Tucker let the window slide down when I was ten feet away.

"Addie." He smiled up at me. "Free country. I'm only parked."

"You're watching her."

"I'm watching a friend. She's wearing a coat I paid for." He tipped his head at Mallory, who stopped walking. "Don't look so scared, Mal. I'm not here for you."

"What do you want, Tucker?"

"To give you an invitation." He took a cream card from the dash and held it out. "My father's fortieth anniversary gala. Saturday, the Palmer House, four hundred people."

"I'm not interested."

"You will be. He wants to meet the new Mrs. Corbin." His smile widened. "Come and tell him your story to his face. See how he likes a woman who calls his son a forger."

I took the card.

"I'll be there," I said.

For a second the smile failed.

Then a black car turned into the lot, too fast, and stopped across the exit.

Heath got out with his jacket open and his eyes on Tucker.

"Time to go," Tucker said brightly, and put the window up and drove around the black car, and was gone.

Heath listened to the memo in the car with his eyes on the windshield.

When it ended he sat for a long time without saying anything.

Then he put the car in gear.

"My mother wants to have dinner with you," he said. "Tonight. I told her it was too soon. She said she's waited eight years."
