Chapter 19: Heath's POV

Heath's POV

Tucker's mother was waiting in my office at eight on Monday morning.

My assistant had let her in and fetched her tea, and she hadn't touched it.

She sat very straight in the chair across from my desk, in the pale suit she had worn to the wedding.

I had met her at her son's graduation, and at two Christmas dinners, and she had always been polite to me in a way that kept a door shut.

"Heath," she said. "Thank you for seeing me."

"You're welcome in my office."

"I'm not sure that's true." She folded her hands. "I won't waste your morning. I have come to ask you for something I have no right to ask."

"Go on."

"My husband has taken Tucker off the board. He's moved him out of the company's accounts as of Saturday night." Her voice stayed level. "Tucker hasn't slept at home since. I don't know where he is."

"I'm sorry."

"No, you aren't, and you shouldn't be." She lifted her chin. "He has a lawyer now, a real one. Your lawyer's letter arrived on Sunday, about a complaint to the district attorney."

"It's a letter. Addie asked for it."

"I'm asking you not to send it."

I looked at her.

She was sixty-five, and I could see the effort it cost her to sit in that chair.

"What do you want me to say?"
