Chapter 11: The Mark

The text came at five in the morning, from a number I did not know.

Your friend is not what you think. Dinah's Diner on Route 41, six a.m. Come alone. I'll talk.

I knew who it was.

I read it twice in the dark, with Declan asleep beside me and his arm heavy across my waist.

I did not wake him.

I was not going to keep it from him. I was going to tell him the minute I had something to say.

I slid out from under his arm, and I dressed in the bathroom, and I called Hazel.

"Come alone," Hazel said, after I told her. "That's what the text says."

"I'm coming alone. You'll be in the car across the street."

"With the engine running."

"With your phone on, and mine on speaker in my pocket."

"I like you," Hazel said. "I'm a little afraid of you, but I like you."

Dinah's Diner had a cracked vinyl counter and a coffee smell that had soaked into the walls.

Darren sat in the last booth with his back to the wall and both hands wrapped around a mug.

He had not shaved.

He looked ten years older than he had in Tierney's doorway, and he looked at the door every time the bell rang.

"Sit," he said.

I sat across from him and put my phone face down on the table.

Under it, the recorder was running.

"You've got ten minutes," I said.

"I won't need that." His voice shook. "She's going to cut me out."

"Who?"

"Tierney." He laughed, short and ugly. "Ten years I've been her partner. Last week she told me it's ten percent on the big one. Ten, not half. She said I'd earned it for the first part and nothing for the rest."
