Chapter 2: Meet Your Doom

Violet wakes in a biker clinic, calls the giant who hit her the Mountain to his face, and he pays her a debt she did not ask for while a club girl throws herself at him.

The first thing I felt when I woke up was every bone I owned.

My head pounded and my left arm hung limp and useless at my side.

I opened my eyes and a wall of man leaned over me.

He was the biggest person I had ever seen in my life.

"You all right, woman?"

His voice was so deep I felt it in the mattress.

"Oh no," I said. "It's the Mountain from Game of Thrones."

One corner of his mouth twitched.

I had said that out loud.

"I think I'm better looking than that guy," I added, because apparently my mouth had decided to finish the job.

Heat flooded my face.

I tried to cover my eyes and a hot stab of pain ran up my left arm.

"Stop moving," he said. "Your shoulder's out."

He was nearly seven feet tall, with brown hair cut close to his head and gray-blue eyes.

Scratches ran across his cheek and a bruise was darkening along the bone.

Under his leather vest he wore a plain black shirt, and his arms looked like they could lift the bed with me in it.

"Are you a doctor?" I asked.

"No. Doc's reading your films."

I looked around.

White cabinets, a locked medicine box, a metal tray of gauze.

It was a clinic, but a small one, with no windows.

"Where am I?"

"My club."

My heart started to race.

"How do you know me?" I asked.

"I don't."

That didn't help.

"I'm the one who hit you," he said.

I stared at him.

"You were in a car?" I said. "The black SUV?"

"I ran the red light."

"Then why am I here and not in an ambulance?"

"I can't have cops on that road tonight."

My mouth went dry.

"Am I being held against my will?"

"No."

"Could I leave if I could walk?"

"You have my word," he said. "But you can't walk."

He leaned closer, and I saw how steady his eyes were.

"Nobody under this roof is going to touch you."

I should have been terrified.

Instead the panic in my chest loosened, and I believed him.

That was probably the stupidest thing I did all week, and the week had barely started.

"Can I have some water?"

He held a glass to my lips and tilted it when I drank.

His hand covered the whole glass.

"Thank you," I said. "I'm Violet."

If I was going to be kidnapped by a giant biker, I could at least be polite.

"Doom."

"Doom?" I asked. "As in, you'll meet your doom?"

"As in, cross me and you'll meet your Doom."

"Got it," I said. "Don't cross the Mountain."

The room went silent.

"I'm so sorry," I said, and shut my eyes. "I'm not usually like this. I think I hit my head."

"You hit it hard," Doom said. "You're bold."

"I'm really not."

He gave one slow nod and didn't argue.

Then his gaze shifted to my phone, which lay on the tray beside the gauze.

It was lit up again.

"Your husband's been blowing that thing up since you got here."

My stomach dropped.

For a few seconds I had forgotten.

"He's apologizing," Doom said. "From what I can see."

"He's not sorry."

I looked away.

"The car you hit was supposed to be his anniversary gift."

Doom said nothing.

"I drove it away from him," I said. "It lasted about an hour, and then you came along."

A tear got loose before I could stop it.

Doom shifted his weight and looked at the ceiling.

"Don't cry, woman," he said roughly. "I don't know what to do with that."

"I think I've earned it," I said. "My husband, my cousin, and then you hit me."

He thought about it.

"Say the word and I'll send someone to beat him down."

I blinked.

He was completely serious.

"I owe you," he added.

The corner of my own mouth almost lifted.

"Thanks," I said. "I'll think about it."

The door opened, and an older man with a gray beard walked in.

His vest said DOC.

"Good, you're up," he said. "Pain?"

"Everything."

"Two of these, then."

He unlocked the medicine box with a code and shook two pills into his palm.

Doom held the water again and I swallowed them.

I still didn't know why I trusted these men.

They had brought me here without asking, and the man with the water had put me in the wreck.

But he had carried me out of it.

The door opened again before anyone could speak.

A blonde woman came in wearing a bra and the shortest shorts I had ever seen.

She walked straight up to Doom and pressed herself against his arm.

"Baby, you look tense," she said. "Let me take care of that tonight."

I stared hard at the wall.

"Don't touch me," Doom said, low.

"You come to me when you want something," she answered.

Doc went on checking my pulse and didn't look up once.

I stared at the ceiling tiles instead of looking at either of them.

I still didn't know what I had walked into.

When she finally flounced out, Doc looked at me over his glasses.

"Don't mind her, hon," he said quietly. "She's a club girl. And you're the first woman Prez ever carried in himself."
