Chapter 1: The Toast

On her third anniversary, Linnea watches her husband toast the woman who once saved his life, then leave her under a burning rig to carry that woman out, and she walks away from the hospital before he arrives.

At nine o'clock on our third anniversary, my husband raised a glass in front of three hundred donors and thanked another woman.

I was standing by the dessert table with a pregnancy test in my clutch.

It was two pink lines in a plastic stick, and I had taken it that morning in the bathroom of our lake house.

Soren had kissed my forehead before he left for the office.

"Tonight is ours," he said. "I'll be right beside you the whole time. I promise."

I believed him, because I always did.

The gala was my husband's family foundation's biggest night of the year, and it fell on our anniversary again.

I had decided not to mind.

I had put on the green dress he liked and packed my keys, my lipstick and the test.

My keyring had a small silver whistle on it, which I'd carried since I was ten.

Astrid Maddox came in late, in white, with her hair pinned up.

She found me first, which was typical of her.

"Linnea, you look beautiful," she said, and she fixed the strap on my shoulder with two quick fingers.

"Thank you. I was about to tell Soren something big."

"Then I'll steal him for one minute and give him right back," she said, and she squeezed my arm.

Everyone in the room knew her story.

Astrid had pulled Soren out of a lake when they were children, and the Lund family had been grateful ever since.

She ran the foundation.

She sat at every holiday table and went on every trip.

I had told myself for three years that gratitude was not a threat.

Soren saw her from across the ballroom, and he put down his drink.

He crossed the floor faster than he had moved for me in a year.

I watched him take both her hands.

Then he walked onto the stage and tapped the microphone.

"Thank you all for coming," he said. "Before the dinner, I want to say something to someone special."

I put my hand on my clutch.

"Astrid," he said, and lifted his glass. "Everything I've built, I owe to you."

The room applauded.

He did not say the word anniversary.

He did not say the word wife.

He did not say my name.

I stood there smiling, because the photographer was pointing his camera at me.

Then something popped near the lighting rig.

The stage curtain went up in flames from the top down.

For a second nobody moved.

Then someone screamed, and the whole ballroom ran for the one open door.

I was knocked sideways into the dessert table.

Plates broke around my feet.

A man's shoulder hit me, and a woman's elbow, and I put out my left hand to catch myself on the metal stand beside me.

The lighting truss above it came down.

It landed across my hand and pinned it to the floor.

The pain went white.

I heard a sound come out of me that I did not know I could make.

Smoke rolled down from the ceiling.

I tried to pull free, and I could not move my fingers at all.

Somewhere above the noise, I saw him.

Soren was ten feet away, with Astrid under his arm.

He looked straight at me.

I watched his face change.

I watched him take one step toward me.

I got my right hand into my clutch, found my keys and put the whistle between my teeth.

I blew it as hard as I could.

One long, shrill note went out through the smoke.

Soren stopped, and his head turned toward the sound.

"Soren!" I screamed. "Please! I can't breathe!"

Astrid cried out behind him, "Soren, my leg, I can't walk!"

He looked at me.

He looked at her.

Then he lifted her off the floor and carried her away.

I watched his back go through the smoke until I couldn't see it any more.

A firefighter found me and cut the truss off my hand with a hydraulic tool.

I do not remember the ride to the hospital.

I remember the ER doctor saying the word crushed.

I remember Elin arriving in her coat with her hair still in a sleep braid, and holding my good hand.

At four in the morning, the nurse said my husband was in the building.

At five, he came around the curtain.

He still wore the tuxedo, black with soot on one sleeve.

He did not ask about my hand.

"Thank God," he said. "Astrid is in the burn unit. Where were you? I looked everywhere."

I held up my phone.

The gala had been livestreamed to donors, and the video had forty thousand views by then.

I played it for him, with the sound on.

It showed me under the truss, blowing the whistle.

It showed him turn.

It showed him look at me, and take his one step, and go.

He watched it all the way to the end.

His mouth was open, and he did not say anything for a long time.

Then he said, "I never saw you."

I had just watched him see me.

I looked down at my left hand, wrapped in a splint, and at the ring on my finger.

Then I eased the ring off with my right hand and set it on the metal tray beside the bed.

"Elin," I said. "Take me out the side door."

He said my name once, very quietly.

I had never heard him say it like that.

I did not turn around.

So I stepped out.
