Chapter 11: On Hold
Posy fell asleep on a stack of flour sacks, wrapped in my coat, with her stuffed rabbit under her chin.
Davis waited until her breathing slowed.
Then he took a sheet of paper out of the shoebox and set it under the candle.
"Steph," he said. "Tell me one thing first. Is there anything I should know about tonight?"
Declan, by the door, started to speak.
"No," Davis said. "I asked her."
I made myself look at him.
"He kissed me," I said. "I kissed him back. Then I stopped it, and I'm telling you because you asked, and because you're the one person who never lies to me."
Davis was quiet for a moment.
"Thank you," he said.
"Davis, I'm sorry."
"No. I mean it. Thank you for telling me." He took a long breath. "I'm going to be hurt about that tomorrow. Tonight there's a piece of paper, and it matters more."
He turned the sheet so we could both see it.
It was the petition.
I had known every line of it for six years.
I had not looked at the top of it once.
"Here is the problem," Davis said. "A real petition to annul a marriage carries a case number, a clerk's stamp and a docket date in the upper right corner. This has a blank box where all three should be."
I stared at the empty rectangle.
"And the signature," he said. "Mr. Hargrove, would you mind?"
He slid a pen across the table.
He gave Declan a clean sheet and said, "Sign your name three times."
Declan did.
Davis laid the three signatures beside the one on the petition and bent over them with his glasses pushed up.
"The D is different," he said. "On the petition it loops back. Yours drops straight down. The H crosses on the left in yours and on the right in this one."
