Chapter 8: The Second Husband

Davis's study is the smallest room in the house, and he had put three chairs in it.

Posy was at the bakery with Dot, eating a roll the size of her head.

The three of us sat down with a pot of tea between us, and nobody drank any.

Davis took off his glasses and cleaned them on his cardigan.

"I'll start," he said. "It's my house."

Declan said, "Please."

"Mr. Hargrove, I'm not going to ask what you want. I know what you want. You want what I'd want, if I had been looking for six years."

Declan didn't move.

"I'm also not going to say I'm fine with it," Davis said. "I'm not. I'm a man who likes his Sunday routine."

I laughed, and it came out wet.

He glanced at me.

"Steph, I have known for three years that I was second."

"Davis, no."

"I did the laundry. I know what's on the cord." He put his glasses back on. "You told me on the porch the day I asked, remember? You said, 'I was married, briefly, and it ended in the mail.' I didn't ask whose name was on it. I thought you'd tell me when you wanted to."

"I should have told you."

"You told me what you could carry." His voice was kind. "That's different from lying."

I could not look at him.

I looked at the tea.

Declan said quietly, "I'm sorry I'm in your house."

"No, you're not," said Davis, "but it's polite."
