The video ended with the brother's laugh and a blur of ceiling.
I played it again with the sound off.
Jeff in his socks. Jeff not moving. A blue polo landing on his shoulder and sliding off.
My dad was in the doorway of the kitchen, drying a pot.
"Something wrong?"
"Can you listen for Evie?"
He looked at my face and set the pot down.
"Go."
Ron and Sharon's street was all big lawns and lamp posts and two-car garages.
I'd been to that house a hundred times for birthdays I paid for the gifts at.
I'd never once seen the neighbors outside.
They were outside now.
A man in a bathrobe stood at the end of his driveway with a dog on a leash.
Two women watched from a porch across the street with their arms folded.
A teenager on a bike had stopped dead at the curb with his phone up.
The porch light lit the whole lawn.
Jeff's clothes were everywhere.
Work polos. Khakis. The flannel pajamas his mother bought him every Christmas.
His laptop bag sat in the middle of the flower bed.
