Chapter 12: Dressing Room

The boutique on Charles Street had one fitting room the size of a small apartment.

A saleswoman with a tape measure around her neck led us to it on Thursday afternoon and left us there with a tray of sparkling water.

"The black," Lachlan said, before she'd even gone. "You're wearing black."

"Why?"

"Because it's a funeral."

I looked at him.

"For whom?"

"For the woman they thought they buried," he said.

I took the black dress off its hanger.

It was silk, with a low back and a long slit up one leg.

I put it on behind the velvet curtain while he sat in an armchair and read his phone.

When I stepped out, he lowered the phone.

He didn't say anything for a long moment.

"Turn around," he said, finally.

I turned.

The back of the dress dropped to just above my hips, and I felt his gaze move down my spine.

"That one," he said, roughly.
