Chapter 9: Fourth Floor
The officer's flashlight dropped as soon as Lachlan rolled the window down two inches.
"Dr. Greer?"
"Officer," Lachlan said, in a perfectly level voice. "How's the knee?"
"Doing great, Doc. Doing great."
There was a very long silence.
I sat on Lachlan's lap with my skirt around my waist and my face pressed into his collar, shaking with silent laughter.
"I'll just," the officer said. "Move along. Have a good night. Congratulations, you two. On whatever this is."
His footsteps crunched away.
I lost it.
I laughed until I cried, and Lachlan laughed too, his chest shaking under me.
He kissed me, sweetly and slowly.
At midnight we were home on the fourth floor.
The French door to the balcony stood open and the curtains moved in the wind.
It was a narrow iron balcony with room for two chairs and a plant that had died in August.
It looked out over the rooftops and the harbor beyond.
I stepped out in his shirt.
The air was cold on my bare legs.
"You'll freeze," he said from the doorway.
"Come warm me up."
He came up behind me, and his chest met my back, and his arms wrapped around my waist.
I leaned into him.
Beyond the roofs I could see the lit windows of other people's lives.
A woman stood at a sink, a man watched television, and someone's cat sat on a ledge.
"I'm scared of this," I said.
"Of what?"
"Of being looked at. At the gala. All those faces turning to me."
