Chapter 18: Press

Jorie came in through the lake door at 6:40 with a hooded figure behind her and a box of cereal under one arm.

The figure pushed back the hood, and it was Ottilie.

She wore a gray sweatshirt of Jorie's, and no makeup, and she stood in Ewan's glass kitchen.

"She's been on my couch since yesterday," Jorie said. "She eats everything. My cat adores her."

Ewan stood at the window with his coffee, watching the lawn.

By seven there were fourteen cameras out there, and a van with a dish on its roof.

"They're asking for a photograph of you," I said. "Nobody's ever had one."

"I know."

"You've hidden for three years."

"I know that, too," Ewan said. "He's counting on it. A man nobody has seen is easy to describe."

He put the cup down on the sill.

"Let me go out," he said.

"Alone?"

"If you stand next to me, they'll write about you. I'd like them to write about me for once."

I looked at him, and the corner of my mouth went up before I could stop it.

"We go out together," I said. "But first I need to ask my sister something."
