Chapter 15: Lakeshore Again

Misty was sitting on the cabin porch with her cast propped on a cooler, smoking, when Hank's truck came up the gravel.

She saw me get out, and she smiled.

"Well, look. The ambulance came."

I climbed the porch steps and stopped in front of her.

Hank stayed at the bottom with his arms folded.

"You said ask your friend what he saw in March," I said. "I asked. He told me. It cost him."

"Aw."

"Now I'm asking you."

"What?"

"Who was driving the night my brother died?"

She took a long drag and let the smoke out slowly.

"You've been in the locker," she said.

"Answer me."

"Why would I?"

"Because there's a state trooper who would like to hear your name in a statement," I said. "And because I'm done being polite to you."

The smile slipped half an inch.

"I never touched anything," Misty said. "I just sat there and listened."

"To Travis."

"He cried on my shoulder for an hour. Six weeks into us. He'd had a bottle of Jack, and it all came out." She shrugged. "Danny, the bike, the gravel. He said he'd been paying for it ever since."

"And you thought, how much."

"I thought he'd rather pay me than lose you," she said.

It was quiet except for the water slapping the dock.

"February," Misty went on. "I told him the rent was due. He said he'd get it. Three thousand eight hundred a month. It wasn't even much, for what I was sitting on."

"It was sixty-one thousand four hundred dollars."

"If you say so."

"You took my father's shop money, knowing my brother was under that story."
