When I Reached the Accident Scene to Save My Biker Husband, I Found His Mistress Wearing My Tenth-Anniversary Gift for Him novel · Chapter 19 of 24

Chapter 19: Route 9

We found him on Sunday at first light.

Gus had called Hank at five.

He had seen the Sportster parked on the shoulder at mile 41 when he drove past on his way to the state police barracks.

Hank pulled the truck onto the gravel behind it.

The river fog was still on the road, and the guardrail ran off into it, white and wet.

Travis was sitting on the ground with his back against the rail and his knees drawn up.

He had not shaved in days.

He didn't stand when we got out.

"Bree," he said.

"Don't get up."

"I wasn't going to."

I stopped six feet from him.

Hank stopped two paces behind me and to the left, where he could see us both.

I wondered what he was thinking.

He had been quiet since the clubhouse, and I knew him well enough to hear that kind of quiet.

Travis held up a thick envelope.

His hand shook.

"It's all in here," he said. "Eight pages. I wrote it last night at the Sunoco, on the counter, and the kid made me coffee."

"What's in it?"

"Everything. The date, the bend, how much I drank. Gus's phone call. The thirty-eight minutes. I signed every page and I dated them."

"For the state police."

"I'll walk it in myself at nine. I wanted you to see it first."

I took the envelope.

It was heavier than I expected.

"There's more," he said. "On top. The divorce. I signed on every line, and I'm not asking for the shop or the house or a dollar. And the bank letter."

"What bank letter?"

"The loan. I'm taking it. All of it. I wrote that I showed you the signature pages only and never said what the house paper was." He rubbed his face. "The bank can come to me."

"They won't get much."

"They'll get what there is."
