Chapter 14: Miracle

Tobias folded the envelope in half and put it inside his shirt.

He did it fast, the way he used to slide his phone face down when I walked into a room.

Delaney saw.

She didn't know what it was. I could tell by how hard she was looking at me instead.

"I'm getting my mother's things," I said. "Then I'm gone."

"Your mother's things." Delaney set the baby-store bag on the hall table, slowly, so I'd see it. "In the attic. With all the other stuff nobody wants."

"Laney," Tobias said.

"No, babe. I want to know why she's here when I'm not."

She walked to the foot of the stairs and looked up at me with her big wet eyes.

"Is this about the baby? Is that why you came?"

"I came for three cardboard boxes."

"You heard about our news, and you couldn't stand it."

She laid her hand on her flat stomach again.

"Everybody in your little town says it. You tried for years. You couldn't give him a baby."

"And then I did. Right away. Like it was nothing."

She smiled up at him.

"It's a miracle, Toby. The doctor said so. Some couples just fit."

Tobias stood very still with one hand on the banister.

I watched him.

He had the letter against his chest. He had the doctor's signature. He had my two dates in my own handwriting.

All he had to do was ask her one question.

He looked at her stomach, and I watched him want it.

I watched him want it so badly he decided not to know.

"She's lying to you," Delaney said, still smiling at him. "Whatever she told you, she came here to break us up. That's all she's ever wanted."

"I divorced him in June," I said. "Without telling him. I'm really bad at wanting him back."

She flushed pink to the hairline.
