Chapter 22: Delaney's Offer
I opened the door but didn't step back from it.
Cold came in around my socks.
"Say it from there," I said.
Delaney smiled.
"It's simple. I'm a simple person." She turned the paper around.
It was a statement, typed, with a line at the bottom for my signature.
"You withdraw the buyback petition. You resign as town engineer. You don't speak at the hearing."
"And?"
"And Spaulding withdraws its complaint against your plumber." She shrugged. "We say the log was a clerical mix-up. Everybody goes home."
"The log was a forgery."
"Was it?" Her eyes went wide. "Prove it in court. It'll take a year. He'll be the man who broke the dam the whole time."
"His daughter will hear it at school every single day. Nine is such a sensitive age."
Behind me, in the kitchen, the cat clock ticked.
