Chapter 28: Every Page
"I'll be there," I said. "I'm the town engineer. It's my job to be there."
"Okay," Tobias said.
He didn't say anything else. He just stayed on the line a second longer, and then he hung up.
By noon the town hall auditorium was full again.
It was the same room where Delaney had called me bitter, and where three hundred hands had hired me for a dollar.
They'd come in their church clothes.
On the stage was one folding table with three chairs. The first selectman. The town's lawyer. And Tobias.
He wore the navy suit. He'd shaved. The cut on his forehead had faded to a thin white line.
A stack of paper sat in front of him, three inches thick.
The lawyer slid it over and put a pen on top.
"Mr. Spaulding. If you'll sign at the flags."
Yellow flags. Down the whole edge of the stack.
Somebody in the front row laughed, and turned it into a cough.
Tobias picked up the first page.
"Purchase and sale agreement," he read out loud. "Alder Falls Water Company. This agreement is made on the eleventh day of March, between Spaulding Capital and the Town of Alder Falls."
