Chapter 21: The Hearing
The preliminary hearing was the following Friday, in a criminal courtroom on the third floor.
It was colder than 4C, and the gallery was full.
Reporters sat in the second row with notebooks on their knees.
Brodie sat at the defense table in a charcoal suit that now hung on him.
His new lawyer was a woman I did not know, and she did not look at him either.
The prosecutor was a tall man in a plain tie, and he called the valet runner first.
The runner wore a borrowed tie, and his mother sat in the front row.
He said it all again in a steady voice.
The clerk held up the folded hundred in a plastic bag.
The defense lawyer asked him if he disliked Mr. Dalton.
"I never met him before that day," the runner said.
"I just don't like what I did for a hundred dollars."
Next the prosecutor called the church secretary.
She came up in the blue dress, holding her purse in both hands.
