Chapter 21: The Offer
Julius read the back of the cheque envelope over my shoulder, in his shirt, with his hair standing up.
There was a statement printed on the reverse in small black type.
I, Leona Hartwell, state that Julius Blomqvist wrote the June text, signed the cheque, and instructed me to keep the child from him.
Below it was a line for my signature.
"Five hundred thousand dollars," Julius said.
"For one signature."
"For my name."
He didn't sound angry.
He sounded like a man looking at a stranger who had put on his coat.
"Call the police," he said. "Call the auditor. I'll call my lawyer."
"No."
He looked at me.
"I want it in the room," I said. "I want him to watch me say it."
The board held an open session that Monday at four.
It was in the rehearsal hall, because the boardroom would not hold the people who came.
Players sat on risers.
Staff stood along the walls with coffee cups.
Donors from the gala had come in coats and scarves, and two reporters sat in the back with notebooks.
