Chapter 4: Room 302
The call from St. Jude's came at ten the next morning, while I was correcting a student's canvas.
"Ms. Farris, your mother is being moved to the county ward today."
The brush snapped against the easel in my hand. "Moved? Why?"
The head nurse sounded strained. "The corporate guarantee on her file was frozen at nine. Keswick Holdings told us to end every private-tier service now."
My ears began to ring.
"I'm coming."
I ran the whole way to the pavilion.
Outside room 302 the hallway was full of people and noise.
Her private nurses had been pulled away the moment the account closed.
Two orderlies had wheeled her bed out in a hurry, and my mother, who could not speak and could not understand why, had panicked in the corridor.
Her blood pressure had spiked and her heart had failed.
A crash cart stood outside the door.
Through the window I saw two doctors working on her chest while a nurse squeezed a bag over her gray face.
Another nurse pushed a clipboard into my hands.
"She needs the cardiac ICU now, with a dedicated team, or she won't last the night. We need your signature on the resuscitation consent and the financial guarantee."
I signed, and it came out as a jagged line.
Behind the glass the monitor screamed one long note and then broke into a ragged beat.
I bit my lip until I tasted blood so that I would not scream.
"Ms. Farris," the nurse said, gently. "The ICU deposit has to be paid today. The hospital can't carry it."
