Chapter 22: The Other Chair
The Hounds' boss walked in alone and took the chair at the foot of the long table.
Nobody told him he could.
Nobody stopped him either.
I sat at the head, in my father's seat, with the ring on the wood in front of me and the old man standing at my shoulder.
"You've got guts," I said.
"I've got a problem." He folded his hands. "Your friend Boone told me three things. That the club belonged to a drunk named Cade. That the girl had no say. And that the land would be mine by the weekend."
"Boone lies."
"So I've learned." He looked down the table. "I came to see how much of it was true."
"None of it."
"I see that."
"Then say why you're here."
"Because I lost eight men on your road, and I'd like not to lose thirty more." His voice stayed even. "I'm told you hold your father's vote. I'm told you hold all of it."
"I hold the ground. Every acre of it."
"Then you're who I should have asked."
"You didn't ask," I said. "You sent a note pinned to my gate with half a patch."
A couple of the brothers snorted.
The boss's mouth twitched.
"What do you want?" he said.
"Four things."
I held up a finger.
"One. The hundred thousand Boone took comes back to my treasury, and so does the price of the freight you stole. Three hundred and forty thousand."
"Three-forty."
"The hauler's bill. I paid it out of the books I keep."
He nodded slowly.
I held up a second finger.
"Two. Your club stays on your side of the river. If one Hound crosses the Marrow Creek bridge on a bike, the sheriff gets a statement with your name in it."
