Chapter 6: The Offer

"Alone," Cade said, looking at Ward. "I want to talk to my wife alone."

"I'm not your wife," I said. "And he stays."

Cade's smile held for a second longer.

"Fine. Let him hear it."

He walked to the hood of his car and laid the folder on it.

"Papers," he said. "Divorce, uncontested. You keep the house. I'll sign it over tonight. Fifty thousand cash from the club account, and your truck, if Boone hasn't wrecked it."

"Boone has my truck."

"He'll give it back when you sign."

I walked over and flipped the folder open.

The top sheet was a petition, and it was clean and short.

The second was a waiver, and it was longer.

I read the heading twice.

It said I gave up any claim to club property, club land and club accounts, now or by inheritance.

"What's this?"

"Standard." He didn't look at it. "It keeps the lawyers out of the club's business."

"My father's name is on half this land."

"Your father's been dead four years, Max."

"That doesn't change what's his."

Cade rubbed his face with both hands.

For a second he looked tired and boyish, and I remembered why I had married him.

"Max. Listen to me. I made a mistake."

"You made a baby."

"It was Christmas. You and I hadn't talked in weeks. I was lonely and I was stupid, and it went too far. I never wanted to hurt you."

"Seven days till our anniversary," I said. "You promised her you'd tell me before then."

He flinched.

"That's what she wants me to say."

"It's what you promised her."

"I promised her nothing." His voice rose. "She's twenty-six and she's scared, and I told her what she needed to hear."
