Chapter 9: The Will
"The club is Cade's," I said. "He's president."
"He's president," the lawyer said. "That is not the same as owning it."
He broke the red wax with a letter opener.
Out of the envelope he drew a stack of pages, a flat brass key and a single folded sheet written by hand.
I recognized the handwriting at once.
"Your father owned the clubhouse, the garage, the bar, the forty acres behind them and the shore of the lake," the lawyer said. "Everything in the Black Hollow Saints that you can stand on belongs to Gene Pellham's estate."
"And the estate is Cade's."
"The estate is yours, Mrs. Sorrell."
I didn't understand the words.
"My father left the house to the club. He told me at the funeral."
"He told you what Mr. Sorrell told you."
The lawyer set the pages down.
"Four years ago you signed a paper at the graveside table. A form from the funeral home, you thought."
I remembered it.
It was raining.
Cade had held an umbrella over me, and the pen had slipped in my wet fingers.
"It was a death certificate copy."
"It was a proxy," the lawyer said gently. "Your father's will gave you the land and the founder's vote on the day you turned thirty. Until then, a husband could cast that vote in your name if you signed it over. Mr. Sorrell asked you to sign it, and you did."
Ward had not moved.
He stood behind my chair with his arms crossed.
"What is a founder's vote?" I asked.
"One vote that counts as seven. No president can be named, no president can be removed, no patch can be taken from a member and no bylaw can be changed without it." He tapped the page. "The club has eleven patched members. Your father made sure his daughter would outweigh all of them."
