Chapter 11: The Radio Log

"Say that again," I said.

"I have never been sick a day in my life." Calvin stood up and the chair scraped. "I haven't been in a hospital since I broke my arm at eleven. I've never had surgery."

"Then why would she tell him..."

"I don't know." He rubbed his face with one hand. "Tell me what she told him about the mountain."

"That she found him in the ravine and pulled him out."

"Which ravine?"

"The Carbon. Nolan went over a ledge last April, pushing me out of the way of a rockfall. He was gone for three days."

Calvin went very still.

He turned and walked out of the back room.

I heard a metal drawer open in the front office, and then he came back with a thick green logbook with a cracked spine.

He put it on the cot beside me and flipped it open to a page marked with a paper clip.

"Radio log," he said. "Every call that comes into this station, who took it and when. I keep it myself. April fourteenth."

He ran his finger down a column.

A line of his own handwriting read: 14:11. Trailhead call, female caller, hiker over the edge at Carbon Ledge, requested help. Responded.

"I was alone at the desk that day," Calvin said. "The caller was out of breath. She said a man had pushed her clear of falling rock and gone off the edge in her place. She said he was going to die if somebody didn't come."
