Chapter 13: What He Told HR

Dean's POV

The paramedics checked Brynn on the ballroom floor and found nothing wrong with her.

Her blood pressure was fine. Her pulse was fine.

She sat up, said she had skipped dinner, and asked in a small voice where I was.

I was in the elevator by then, with my wife's good hand around my sleeve, because Carrie could not manage the crutches and the crowd at once.

Neither of us spoke on the ride down.

At nine the next morning my phone rang, and it was HR.

"Dean, I know you're on leave. The executive from last night would like twenty minutes. Today, if you can."

I put on the blue shirt, because it was the clean one.

The office was quiet on a Saturday. A woman from HR sat at the end of a long table with a laptop, and next to her sat my manager.

He did not look at me when I came in.

The woman in the navy suit from the stage sat across from them with a paper cup of coffee.

"Sit down, Dean," the woman in the navy suit said. "Nobody is firing anyone this morning. I want to hear it from you."

I sat.

"Hear what?"

"Did you know?" she said. "Not what Brynn did. Whether you knew a hospital had called your phone."

"No."

"Would you have known, if you'd been looking?"

My manager shifted in his chair.

I could have said no again. It would have been easy, and half true.

"Yes," I said.

The woman set down her coffee.
