Chapter 9: The Sag Wagon
The silver sedan had come back every night that week, always with its lights off.
On Sunday morning I checked the street twice before Faye drove me out, and it was empty.
At eight, I stood on crutches outside Hank's bike shop, still looking over my shoulder.
Fourteen people were getting ready to ride a river trail at the speed of a brisk walk.
Nobody looked at me twice.
A woman in her seventies adjusted her helmet strap. A boy of fifteen sat on a bench with headphones on, tapping a pedal with his shoe. A man in a Hawaiian shirt was inflating a tire with a hand pump and complaining about it.
"Carrie!"
Hank came out of the shop with a clipboard and a grin.
"You made it. Everybody, this is Carrie. She's got the worst knee in the group, so be nice to her."
"I have a shoulder," said the man in the Hawaiian shirt.
"You have a drinking problem," said the woman in her seventies.
"That's a different department."
Everyone laughed, and I felt something loosen in my chest that I had been holding tight for weeks.
"I can't ride yet," I told Hank.
"I know. You're on the van."
"The van?"
He pointed with his pen.
An old white delivery van was parked at the curb, with a cooler strapped to the roof rack and a hand-painted sign on the door that said SAG WAGON.
"Somebody has to hand out water and pie coupons," Hank said. "Somebody has to count heads at the turnaround. That's you. Faye said you'd say yes."
"You talked to my sister?"
"Everybody talks to your sister. She's scary."
