Chapter 13: The Right Page
The gold pen was heavier than it looked.
I lifted the release off the tablecloth, and the room went so quiet I could hear the candles.
My father watched my hand.
Fiorella watched his face.
Ines had stopped breathing, and I could see it in her shoulders.
The release ran two pages, stapled at the corner.
The first page was a block of Cardinale lawyer's prose, which I skimmed the way my father had taught me.
I turned it over to find the line for my name.
The heading on the second page was not the one I expected.
It said, "Claim of the daughter of Ruggero Sabbadin, to be opened by the notary at the first night of the harbor council."
Under it was a blank line, a date and a seal I knew from the corner of my real father's letter.
I didn't let my face move.
A gray man stood at the sideboard with a brown folder under his arm.
It had a gold clasp.
He was the old lawyer who had drawn up my father's papers for forty years, and I had never seen his hands shake before.
