The hall was fuller on the second night.
Boys sat in the rafters.
Women had brought their children, and old stevedores stood three deep along the back wall with their hats pressed to their chests.
My father stood alone in the middle of the stone floor, exactly where the council had left him.
They hadn't let him sit overnight.
His suit was creased, and the skin under his eyes looked bruised.
The small man in the gray coat walked to the center of the half circle at nine.
He set the long leather case on a table and opened it with two brass keys.
Inside, on a bed of faded velvet, lay a folded document tied with black ribbon.
"I am the notary of the Sabbadin trust," he said, and his voice filled the hall without effort.
"Ruggero Sabbadin sat in my office seventeen years and four months ago and told me to keep this case until his daughter turned twenty-two."
