Chapter 23: The Crawl
The night shift came off Pier One at six, as it did every morning.
They found two hundred dock workers already standing in the cold along both rails, and nobody had told them to be quiet.
I stood at the head of the pier with Corrado at my left shoulder and the keys of the Quay on my belt.
The cook sat in her wheelchair on my right with a blanket over her knees and a cast iron frying pan in her lap.
"Don't look at me like that," she said.
"The doctor said I could bring something to hold."
The sky over the harbor was the color of dishwater.
Down at the far end of Pier One, two men in dark coats opened the door of a car.
Tancredi got out.
He wore the same shirt, with no coat and no shoes.
His hands were tied in front of him again, but the rope was a soft one now, almost a formality.
The underboss walked three paces behind him with his hat on and a leather satchel in his right hand.
"Walk," the underboss said.
Tancredi looked up the pier at the two hundred faces.
