Chapter 22: Easter Morning

Celie's POV

"Yes," I said.

It was the middle of the night, and I said it into the dark.

Tommy's heart was under my cheek, and Vince's arm lay across my waist.

Neither of them said anything.

Tommy pulled me tighter, and Vince's hand stopped moving on my hip and began to shake.

We slept like that.

I woke at first light on Easter Sunday with church bells going off across Uptown.

The window was open, and the curtains breathed in and out.

Tommy lay on his back with one arm flung over his head, snoring slightly.

Vince lay on his stomach beside him with his curls in his face and his mouth open.

I looked at the two of them for a long time.

Then I slid down under the sheet.

I took Tommy in my mouth first.

He was soft and warm and half asleep, and he grew hard against my tongue in a few slow strokes.

He woke with a groan.

"Celie," he said, thick and rough. "Good morning."

"Happy Easter."

"It's a very happy one."

His hand fell heavy in my hair.

I took him deeper, slowly, and felt his hips move once, helplessly, and stop.

"Don't," he said, and laughed. "Don't, or I'll finish before breakfast."

"Then we should have breakfast."

I climbed out from under the sheet, picked up his white shirt from the floor, and put it on.

It came to the middle of my thighs.

Tommy watched me button it, and his eyes went dark.
