Chapter 8: Front Page

By nine o'clock the photograph was everywhere.

Gethin's phone buzzed on the kitchen table without stopping, and he turned it over and let it buzz against the wood.

I stood in the doorway in yesterday's jumper and read the article on my own phone.

It called me a runaway wife.

It said a source close to the family had seen me move into the home of an ambulance worker days after leaving my husband.

It said the marriage had been over for months.

"A source close to the family," I said. "Who is that?"

"Someone who wanted a photographer on the street before you got to the door," Gethin said. "That's all I know."

"Alistair said it wasn't him."

"Maybe it wasn't."

He didn't say who, and he didn't need to.

He took a call, and listened, and said, "Yes. Yes, I understand," and hung up.

"That was my station manager," he said. "Someone rang the Trust this morning and complained that a paramedic is involved with a patient."

"I wasn't your patient on Sunday."

"You were on Tuesday."

I put my phone down on the counter.

"I'll go," I said. "I'll find somewhere else today."

"No."

"Gethin, they could take your job."

"They might ask me some questions. That's all." He pushed the chair back and stood. "I've been asked harder questions by people having a heart attack."
