Chapter 15: Garrick's Terms
Four guards carried Alaric up the east tower, and I climbed behind them with my hand on his chest.
The gold went into him as long as I touched him.
By the time they laid him on the round bed, the grey had stopped at his collarbone.
It would not go back any farther.
"The fever is breaking," the healer said from the door. "He will wake clear-headed within the hour."
"I know where I'm going first," I said.
The cells lay under the guard hall, down a stair that smelled of wet stone.
Garrick sat on a bench behind iron bars, grey in the face, with his burned hand wrapped in linen.
Two palace guards stood by the door, and beside them stood the old woman from Vandeleur who had taken Jory from my arms on the Moon Stone.
She had come down with the pack's elders to see him.
She did not look at me when I came in.
"I need your blood at the Moon Stone," I said. "The night after next."
"I know what you need."
"Then you know why you'll give it."
Garrick lifted his head.
There was an old arrogance in the way he did it, and under it something scraped hollow.
