Chapter 20: Alaric Whole
He did not say anything on the way up the tower stairs.
I counted the steps again, one hundred and four, with his coat still around my shoulders and his hand tight on mine.
At the top he shut the door and leaned his back against it.
His eyes were gold, and there was no grey in them anywhere.
"He's afraid," Alaric said.
"Your wolf?"
"Two years ago he stopped answering the dark. He quit calling for you because nobody came." He rubbed his thumb along his jaw. "I've been trying to tell him you're real since the kitchen."
"Tell him again."
"I can't do it with words."
I let the coat slide off my shoulders onto the floor.
I stood bare in front of him, with the fire on my skin.

He looked at me for a long time.
"Elspeth," he said. "You are the most beautiful thing that has ever been in this room."
