Chapter 12: Hers

The hall broke open.

Two hundred wolves started talking at once, and under it, from somewhere at the back, a low growl began to build.

It wasn't aimed at me.

It was aimed at the Council step.

My father stood up into it.

"Yes," he said. "Yes, I did it."

The noise faltered.

"The Crown asked," he said, loud and steady. "My King came to me with his only son dying on a table, and he asked me for the one thing I could give. What would any of you have done?"

He turned in a slow half circle to the Council.

"You'd have said no? To the King? With the Prince bleeding out?" He spread his hands. "I gave the Crown its heir. I gave this Court its King. The old King rewarded loyalty. That's all seat eleven ever was."

The North shifted on the step, his towel slipping.

"He's not wrong about the law," he muttered. "A wolf who obeys his King's direct command has committed no crime."

Some of the elders nodded.

Not all of them. The Gulf looked at my father like something she'd scraped off her shoe.

"You took a girl's wolf while she slept," she said.

"I saved a Prince," my father said. "And she lived. Look at her. She's fine."

I walked out into the middle of the floor.

The healer's wheelchair was on my left. Evander was on my right, still on one knee, his face gray.

I stopped in front of the Council step and looked up at my father.

"I'm fine," I said.

"You're standing, aren't you?"

"I stood at the back of every full moon for eight years, Dad. You made me hand out the blankets."

My voice was steady.

I didn't know where it was coming from.

"You told the whole valley I was a dead branch. You told my fiance I'd give him a litter of nothing. You let me think something was wrong with me since I was twenty-two." I took one step up. "And you were sitting at the King's table the whole time, on what you cut out of me."
