Chapter 21: Mate

He shifted right there on the terrace, in his good suit.

The seams went with a sound, and then a wolf stood beside me on the frosted stone.

Silver-gray, like before.

But a head smaller than the giant that had lain across my car door in the snow.

His eyes were gray. Not gold. Gray, with a ring of amber at the center.

His own.

He looked down at his own paws like he'd never seen them.

Then he looked at me, and his tail went once, hard.

I bumped my shoulder into his.

He bumped back, hard enough to knock me a step sideways.

And then we were running.

Down the terrace steps. Across the white lawn. Into the black pines with the moon coming through them in long bars.

I had watched this from a porch my whole life.

I had stood with the blankets and listened to the pack go by in the dark.

Now the snow flew up under my own feet, and the cold came into my own lungs, and the smell of the whole mountain poured into me at once.

Pine. Deer. Frozen creek. Woodsmoke from the town below.

Him, running beside me, matching me stride for stride.

He was faster. I could feel it.

He let me win anyway, all the way down to the lake, and I knew he'd let me, and I didn't care.

The lake was frozen at the edges and black in the middle, with the moon lying on it.

At the end of the shore stood a small log lodge, dark, with snow on its roof.

He trotted to the door and shifted back.

He stood up naked in the snow, laughing, and shoved it open with his shoulder.

"My father's hunting lodge," he said. "Nobody's used it in years. There's a stove."

I shifted back on the threshold.

I was naked too, and shaking, and not from the cold.

He knelt and lit the woodstove while I stood dripping snow on the floorboards.

There was one room. A wide bed under the window, heaped with fur blankets.

The fire caught. Orange light jumped up the log walls.
