Chapter 13: The Year

The old healer picked up her trowel and her stick and left us there without a word.

I understood that she had planned it.

Ronan didn't move from the end of the row.

"Say it," I told him. "All of it. Don't make me pull it out of you."

"You walked into the hall at midnight," he said, and his voice was rough. "You were eighteen for ten minutes."

"The scent hit me when you went past."

"Mine did."

"I smelled cedar and rain and it was you, on a coat, three rows over."

"I was standing at the head of the hall," he said. "I smelled you the second the doors opened."

"Then why didn't you say so?"

"You watched me beg for a minute."

"I watched you beg a boy who wore my coat, and I thought, she picked him. I thought the Moon had made a joke of me."

"You thought I wanted Dane."

"I thought you were sixteen years younger than me and you had chosen someone your own age."

His hands closed at his sides.

"And then he said the words, and you went down, and my legs came back."

I hit him.

It was a flat hand against his chest, and he didn't try to stop it.

I hit him again, harder.

"A year," I said. "You gave me terms. You told me I could undo it."
