Chapter 16: Choosing

I got into the truck because Tilly had already climbed in the back and shouted at me to.

Dane drove with both hands on the wheel and didn't look at me once.

"The Challenge was never about the chair," he said. "My mother doesn't think I can hold it."

"Then what is it about?" Tilly demanded.

"Blackwater. She promised them the ford and the east pasture, and they send wolves to sit in the south dormitory. Those boys behind me at the hall aren't ours. Every one of them has a silver knife in his boot."

I stared at him.

"She wants Ronan dead on the floor at sundown," I said.

"She wants him dead, and me kneeling in his chair, and a pack too scared to ask how. She told me nobody would be hurt."

His voice cracked on the last word.

"I stood in your window because she told me to. I said those words at the Rite because she told me to."

"I know that, Dane."

"I'm trying to say that I'm done."

He swallowed.

"I sat in the kitchen and watched her write the letter to Blackwater. She didn't even lower her voice."

The truck bumped over the pack line, and a gray wolf came out of the trees running flat out.

Ronan hit the ground in front of the bumper and changed in midair.

He was on my side of the truck with the door wrenched open before the wheels had stopped.

His hands went over my arms, my face, my wrists with the silver burns.

"I'm fine," I said. "I'm fine. My wolf got us out."

"I'll kill every one of them."
