Chapter 22: Second Mark

Nobody in the hall had ever seen it done.

An Alpha marks his Luna, and the pack calls her theirs.

A Luna who marks her Alpha is a thing the old men said happened once, in the valley, a hundred winters ago.

Ronan took off his shirt in front of two hundred wolves.

He knelt on the dais so that his shoulder came level with my mouth.

The lamps burned low and steady.

"You don't have to," he said, very quietly, for me alone.

"I know."

"If you do, it can't come off."

"Ronan Hallett," I said. "I've been trying to say this for two weeks."

I put my hand on the back of his neck, and I felt the wolf come up in both of us.

I bit.

My teeth went in at the join of his neck and shoulder, and his blood ran hot over my tongue.

He groaned, deep in his chest, and his hand came up and gripped my hip.

*Mine,* I told him, in his head and in mine, and his answer came back so loud I almost lost my balance.

*Yours. Always yours. Yours.*

The bond went through the hall, and every wolf in it felt it.

Somebody started to howl, and then the whole room did, two hundred voices in a single note that shook the lamp glass.

Tilly was the loudest.

She was standing on a bench with her braid undone, crying and howling at once.

I lifted my mouth from his shoulder.

My lips were red, and he looked up at me, with amber eyes and a face I wanted to keep forever.
