Chapter 25: Naming Night

The doors of the pack hall banged open halfway through my daughter's name.

Ronan had just said "Hazel," and the old healer had just lifted the bowl of spring water over her head.

Every wolf in the hall turned toward the doors.

Eleven strangers stood in the doorway in canvas coats, with the last of the August light behind them.

The man in front was broad and stooped, with a gray crew cut and pale eyes that went straight to the dais.

Behind him, leaning on a cane, stood the bearded man from the van.

He still limped on the leg Ronan had broken.

"Guest-right," the broad man said, and his voice carried without any effort. "I ask it at your door, Alpha, as the old law gives it."

Nobody in Hollow Creek could refuse that.

A guest who asked at the hall door couldn't be touched or turned out for seven days.

In those seven days he couldn't take anything that belonged to the pack, either.

Ronan held Hazel against his chest.

She was four months old, in a cotton gown the widows had sewn, with white-blonde fuzz on her head and one fist working at his collar.

He had lifted her out of the cradle board himself a minute before.

His left hand had shaken so badly that I'd stepped in to take her.

"My arm fell asleep," he'd said, and I had let it go.

Now he settled her in the crook of his right arm and pressed his left hand flat against his thigh.

"Who asks?" he said.

"Boyd Satterfield, Alpha of Blackwater."
