Chapter 32: Birthday Girl
Neither of us said anything on the way home.
The girl had gone back across the water on her own feet, and Satterfield's lantern had gone with her.
Ronan walked a step behind me up the hill, and I could feel exactly where he was.
I heard the clock in the pack hall tower strike twelve while we were still on the path.
"Nineteen," Ronan said, hoarsely, into the dark.
I stopped.
"I forgot," I said. "I forgot what day it was."
"I didn't."
He had remembered it for a week.
I could tell, because when we reached the Alpha's house the porch was hung with the widows' dried flowers, and the kitchen was dark, and the cradle was gone from the corner of our room.
A note lay on the pillow in Tilly's round hand.
Took the baby. Happy birthday. Go be furious. Love, T
I read it and folded it into my pocket with the one from the council.
Ronan stood in the doorway with his hand on the frame.
"Nora."
"Close the door."
He closed it.
"I thought it was me," I said.
I hadn't known I would say it.
It came out flat and quiet, in the lamplight, to the middle of the room.
"After the den. You kept your shirt on. You kept your left hand off my skin. You wouldn't let me touch you."
His face changed.
"I stood there in that green dress and I told myself you didn't want to look at me," I said. "That I'd been a girl you could want, and now I was a mother with stripes on her stomach, and you were too kind to say."
"God, Nora. No."
"Then why?"
He took one step toward me, and stopped.
