Chapter 7: Knock

I didn't tell Ronan about the video.

Celia wanted him to swing at his brother in front of witnesses.

If I showed him that clip, he'd go straight to the barn.

So I kept it, and Tilly took the phone to her bed.

I went to bed in the room that wasn't mine.

At midnight I was still awake.

The mark burned all down my neck.

My wolf paced in my chest, back and forth, with her eyes on the wall that Ronan slept behind.

I put my feet on the cold floor.

I stood at his door in a T-shirt and my underwear, and I knocked.

It was one of the terms.

He opened it almost at once, in sweatpants, with his hair wet from the shower.

He was bare from the waist up, and I looked at all of it.

The wide shoulders, the pale scar down his forearm, a long healed mark across his ribs I hadn't known about.

"Nora," he said. "What's wrong?"

"Nothing's wrong."

"Is it the wolf?"

"Yes." I swallowed. "She won't stop."

He looked at my face, and then at my bare legs, and his jaw tightened.

"Go back to bed, birthday girl."

I stepped through the door.

"Say that again."

"Nora."

"Say it again, and look at me while you do."

He didn't.

He stood absolutely still, and the amber came up in his eyes, slow and bright.

"You turned eighteen three days ago," he said, low and rough. "I'm trying to do this right."

"I'm eighteen. You can't be the only one who knows the arithmetic."

I put my hands flat on his chest.

His skin was very hot.

His heart slammed under my palm, and I felt it in mine, a second beat, the same one.

"Ronan."

He closed his eyes.

"I'll stop the second you tell me to."

"I'm not going to tell you."

I didn't know I'd said it until it was out.

His hands came up and took my face, hard, and he kissed me.
